A retired Layton police officer has been charged with sexually abusing two teenage girls earlier this year.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit filed in Farmington's 2nd District Court, the man fondled a 14-year-old girl and forced her to fondle him on several occasions from January through May. During that same period the man also fondled a 16-year-old girl while she was walking up some stairs, the affidavit states.
Police have charged Thomas Ray Gibbons, 48, with four counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. Each count is punishable by one to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Gibbons worked about 16 years in the Layton Police Department before retiring in September 1994, said Layton Police Lt. Steve Brown. Gibbons spent most of his career as a patrol officer before becoming a school resource officer, Brown said.
