WASHINGTON (AP) — Three of the largest media mergers ever conceived — the proposed marriage between WorldCom Inc. and Sprint Corp., the recent acquisition by AT&T Corp. of MediaOne Group Inc. and America Online Inc.'s pending purchase of Time Warner Inc. — met with domestic and international challenges Monday.

The European Union's antitrust chief virtually sealed the fate of the WorldCom and Sprint deal, saying the companies had offered a "less than satisfactory" response to concerns of overseas regulators that the pair would dominate high-level Internet access around the world.
