WILLIAMS RETIRES: Jayson Williams, a star rebounder whose career with the New Jersey Nets was undercut by injuries, has retired. The decision by the 32-year-old center came 14 months after he broke his right leg and tore up a knee in a collision with a teammate.

BINGHAM HIRING COACH: The Jordan School District is now accepting applications for the vacant Bingham High head basketball coaching job. The position became open this week when longtime coach George Sluga was fired by Bingham principal Tom Hicks.

A district representative said interested applicants should be teachers who have coaching experience, but para-professionals will be considered as well. Apply at the district offices at: 9361 S. 300 East in Sandy. For information, call George Welch at 567-8223 in the human resources department.

RIPKEN ON DL: Cal Ripken was put on the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed lower back, meaning the Baltimore Orioles' third baseman will still be sidelined during the All-Star game July 11 at Atlanta. Ripken has made a record 16 straight All-Star starts.

Hockey

STAYING PUT: Alexei Yashin's bid to escape his contract with the Ottawa Senators has been turned down by an arbitrator. The ruling means Yashin, who sat out the final year of his contract last season over a salary dispute, owes Ottawa another year at $3.6 million. Yashin sought to be a free agent.

Soccer

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP: Zinedine Zidane made a penalty kick with three minutes left in overtime as World Cup champion France beat Portugal 2-1 to reach the European Soccer Championship finals.

WOMEN'S GOLD CUP: Canada, the U.S. opponent in the Women's Gold Cup semifinals Saturday, says it not only has a chance against the Americans but might even pull the upset. "If we play the way we know we can play, our team has the potential to play with them and beat them," said forward Christine Latham, who had three goals in Canada's 12-0 win over Guatemala Wednesday.

China will face Brazil in Saturday's other semifinal. China struggled but defeated Mexico 3-0 in Wednesday's other game.

Softball

CANADA CUP: Utah Valley State College players Tiffany Weight, Sabrina Dinkel and Brenda Hart have been selected to play on the NJCAA All-Star women's softball team that will compete in next month's Canada Cup in Softball City, British Columbia. In addition, UVSC softball coach Todd Fairbourne will be an assistant coach.

SEATTLE INVITATIONAL: Larry H. Miller Toyota looks to "three-peat" in the 40th Seattle Invitational Friday through Sunday. Miller Toyota (32-9) has been in Seattle Invitational championship game three of the last four years.

Boxing

TYSON HEARING: British boxing officials have set a hearing Aug. 9 for Mike Tyson to explain his actions during and after his 38-second victory over Lou Savarese last weekend. The British Boxing Board of Control called Tyson to testify about throwing several punches at Savarese after referee John Coyle had stopped the fight, then launching into a verbal tirade at heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis.
