MIAMI (Reuters) — Three Cuban-born men from the Miami area were arrested and charged on Friday with attempting to smuggle 21 Cubans from the communist island into Florida last September, Florida prosecutors said.

Antonio Quinones, 39, Marino Perez, 46, and Raciel Nunez, 31, were each charged with one count of conspiracy and 21 counts of alien smuggling.

The defendants' speed boat, which was driven by Perez and Nunez and registered to Quinones, left Cuba on Sept. 3, 1999. It was speeding toward Key West in south Florida when it was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The 21 people were all returned to Cuba, the U.S. Attorney's office said.
