DURBAN, South Africa (AP) — The AIDS scourge is the greatest health crisis facing the world's children today, the chief of UNICEF said Wednesday as she called for "the largest mobilization of resources in history" to combat the epidemic.

Carol Bellamy, executive director of the U.N. Children's Fund, told a news conference at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban: "Our only hope of stopping HIV/AIDS hinges on the willingness of nations to fight back with everything they have."

"What is required here is the largest mobilization of resources in history," she said.

UNICEF's annual Progress of Nations report, released Wednesday, said the virus, which infects more than 10 million young people worldwide, was badly hurting even those who are not infected.
