Joel Steadman has run in the Deseret News/Granite Furniture 10K race a number of times. He says he "grew up with the July 24th races" because his mother Florence has run the DesNews marathon 13 times.
So it was only natural that the company for which he is area manager, SOS Staffing Services, join in as a race sponsor five years ago. It's been a great win-win relationship ever since.
"The Pioneer Day holiday was always race day for our family," he said. "I've run the 10K a number of times, but my knees have never allowed me to do the marathon."
Though neither Steadman will be running this year, you might see Joel joining with volunteers at the SOS Staffing Services booth in Liberty Park, handing out some of the 3,000 bottles of water they will distribute to finishers of the races.
When he's not handing out bottled water, he helps SOS with its immense staffing efforts that include placing of temporary and permanent employees in a variety of positions, including clerical, administrative assistants, small accounting and labor divisions. Last year, SOS Staffing sent out nearly 45,000 W-2's to employees in Utah.
"We've always had a strong community presence here," he said, explaining that SOS started its staffing services in Salt Lake City 27 years ago. The company now maintains seven offices along the Wasatch Front as part of its network of 150 offices in 14 states.
"The DesNews races are the biggest event for runners in Utah, so it made sense to become a sponsor of something that benefits so many, both those running and the charities they help," he said.
Again this year, $1 of each registration fee for the marathon and 10K races will be donated to the Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program. Those registering for the 5K Fitness Walk will have $1 of their fees donated to the Shriner's Hospital.
The marathon begins at Little Dell Golf Course at 5 a.m., while the 10K starts at 6:15 a.m. at the University Park Marriott Hotel. Those in the 5K Fitness Walk will leave the starting line at the Delta Center at 7 a.m. All three events finish along the Days of '47 Parade route and in Liberty Park.
Advanced registration for the July 24th races and walk ended today, but those wishing to participate still have another chance. Final registration will take place at the University Park Marriott Hotel on July 22 and 23rd. Information is available on the web at deseretnews.com/run, and by calling 468-2299.
