An explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec, about 16 miles west of Montreal, sent up a cloud of toxic smoke and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. The blaze erupted about 9:30 p.m. Sunday at an acid-transformation plant. No injuries were reported, and tests detected no serious environmental damage. Most residents were told they could return home shortly before 5 a.m.
