A black man, assaulted Saturday by three white juvenile males, may have been a victim of a hate crime, police say.
The victim was not injured and called police to investigate, after the boys shouted racial epithets and threw rocks and a socket wrench at him, according to a police report.
The man, an ice cream truck driver, was working in the area of 847 S. 400 East when the suspects waved him over for ice cream. He stopped his truck and was assaulted.
One of the accused boys admitted to the assault. He said he was angry because he didn't have money to buy some ice cream. The two other boys denied involvement and said their friend did it because the man was black.
The victim said all three juveniles were involved. The juveniles were cited and released to their parents, the report said.
