Spurrier a sponsor in News races

Scott Spurrier had no idea when he served an LDS mission to Korea "a few years ago" where his time in that nation would lead him.

It's led him to this year's Deseret News/Granite Furniture marathon and 10K races July 24th.

Once Spurrier returned to Utah, he began importing running shoes from Korea.

That practice eventually led to the opening of his first store in Logan.

Today, he is owner and operator of the New Balance/In Soles running store at 1356 S. Foothill Drive in Salt Lake City and an active sponsor of the Deseret News races and 5K Fitness Walk that annually commemorate Pioneer Day.

"This seemed like a natural event to be part of," Spurrier said. "We've been helping those who run in the races for years, and although I've never run it myself, I've heard many good things about both the marathon and the 10K races, so I was glad to get involved."

Spurrier's business is one of the state's most complete running stores, featuring some of the most popular brands of shoes, such as Asics, New Balance, Brooks, Saucony, Nike, Adidas and Mizuno.

He also carries clothing and accessories for runners, including, of course, insoles, for which his store is named.

"Anything we can do to add to the enjoyment of running for the public is our goal," he said.

"I'm pretty much just a recreational runner now, but I know how important it is for those who are running to feel comfortable in everything they wear. That's what we specialize in."

Race organizers will spend many long hours along the race courses that wind down the hillsides and into Liberty Park, where all three events finish.

Spurrier hopes to continue his involvement next year.

This is the 31st year for the marathon, which begins at 5 a.m. at the Mountain Dell Golf Course, winds down through Emigration Canyon and finishes along the route of the Days of '47 Parade in downtown Salt Lake City.

The 10K race, now in its 18th year, should attract several thousand runners when it begins at 6:15 a.m. in the University Park area.

The 5K Fitness Walk will start at the Delta Center at 7 a.m. and continue to Liberty Park.

Runners will finish their races being cheered on by tens of thousands of parade-goers who are gathered to watch the parade.

"Each year we seem to be getting bigger and better, particularly with the help of our sponsors," said Steve Handy, marketing director for the Deseret News and executive race director. "We're excited to have Scott and his store on our team this year."

Two charities benefit from this year's races, with $1 of each registration fee for the marathon and 10K races going to the Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots program and $1 of the fitness-walk registration fees going to benefit Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City.
