Cannons 7, Buzz 2

CALGARY, Alberta — Frankly, it was worse than that time at Mudville.

This time, at sun-splashed Burns Stadium, mighty Casey — Casey Blake of the Buzzville nine — did not strike out as in Ernest Thayer's legendary poem. Mighty Casey hit into a triple play!

Calgary got a 7-2 win Thursday afternoon to halt the Buzz winning streak at six.

Salt Lake, trailing 4-1 in the seventh with the bases loaded and none out, was about to blast the Cannons when Casey slapped what looked like a bloop single to shallow center. Manny Martinez raced in for a shoestring catch. Buzz baserunners gambled.

Torii Hunter was torn between second and third when Martinez flipped the ball to second baseman Amaury Garcia for the second out. Then Brian Buchanan wandered off third, and Garcia fired there to leave him in a rundown.

The triple play, Calgary's first in six years, scored 8-4-5-2-5.

Still, the Buzz emerged from an eight-game Alberta swing with six wins and tonight open an eight-game homestand against Albuquerque Dukes.
