TREMONTON — A false tip from a 911 caller informing police of a hostage situation led to the arrest of a man and woman Friday.

The early morning call prompted response from the Tremonton Police, Box Elder County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, Brigham City SWAT team, Utah Highway Patrol and Adult Probation and Parole officers.

Police were told an armed man was holding a woman and her 18-month-old son hostage in an apartment complex, a Tremonton Police Department press release said. Later, after evacuating the complex, police located the alleged hostage-taker at his girlfriend's apartment. He was transported to the scene, but officers determined he was not involved.

When investigators realized the call was a hoax, they arrested the man who called 911. That man was taken to Brigham City Community Hospital with a suspected overdose of a controlled substance and later flown to a Salt Lake hospital. The woman who was initially reported to be a hostage was also arrested for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia.

The toddler was released to his father.
