A major Latino ceremony unfamiliar to most Utahns is the "quinceañera," a huge celebration with religious overtones that celebrates a young woman's 15th birthday. The quinceañera is commonplace in Mexico where families frequently spend small fortunes in celebrations attended by the entire community. "It's a celebration that says I am becoming a lady, that I am not a little girl anymore," said Armida Quintero, who recently celebrated her quinceañera at the Centro Civico Mexicano in Salt Lake City with scores of family and friends. Some traveled from California and Nevada to attend the traditional rite, which included a white dress from Mexico, admonitions from her Catholic priest to live a good life and a "last dance" with her father.
