NEW YORK — Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez and Cleveland Indians outfielder Manny Ramirez were named the American League co-players of the week.
Martinez posted two wins and a 0.53 earned run average in a couple of starts last week. He gave up one run, 11 hits and three walks while striking out 27 batters in 17 innings.
Ramirez, who was activated from the disabled list on July 13, led the league with six home runs and 13 runs batted in while batting .360 in seven games.
New York Yankees pitcher Denny Neagle and Kansas City's Johnny Damon were also considered for the award.
