BUCKS TO RETAIN THOMAS: Bucks forward Tim Thomas said he plans to turn down a contract offer from the Chicago Bulls and a guaranteed starting spot with the Detroit Pistons to return to Milwaukee next season.


PANTHERS SIGN SWANN: Defensive tackle Eric Swann signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Swann, a 10-year veteran, was released by Arizona two weeks ago. He has undergone seven knee operations over his career and missed 18 of 34 games the last two seasons with the Cardinals.

SUMMERALL TO RETIRE IN '02: Pat Summerall, 70, announced his retirement as an NFL broadcaster, effective after the 2001 season.


HURRICANES INK OZOLINSH: The Carolina Hurricanes signed All-Star defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh to a five-year contract worth more than $25 million.
