LOS ANGELES — Compton's police chief, two former officers and a former city councilman have sued the city for disbanding the police department and giving law enforcement duties to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order was filed Wednesday in Superior Court by attorney Richard Silber. The plaintiffs are Chief Hourie Taylor, former Capt. Eric Perrodin, retired Sgt. Cornelius Atkins and former Councilman Fred Cressel.

The move to disband comes on the heels of a marked jump in crime in Compton, where eight people were killed in 10 days earlier this month.

The lawsuit contends that Compton officials didn't have the authority to disband the department or transfer its duties to an outside contractor, Silber said.
