AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Wendy Palmer scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds Wednesday night to lead the slumping Detroit Shock to a 78-62 victory over the Miami Sol.
Coach Nancy Lieberman-Cline benched Palmer and Claudia Maria das Neves and started rookies Barbara Farris and Edwina Brown.
Farris pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds, das Neves scored 11 points and Brown had eight for the Shock (11-13).
Milena Flores scored 10 points for the Sol (9-16), who lost their fifth in a row.
STING 87, MYSTICS 80: At Charlotte, N.C., Andrea Stinson's 33 points and Dawn Staley's 13 assists set team records as Charlotte won its third straight by beating Washington.
Stinson, who scored a career-high, fell one point shy of the WNBA season-high scoring mark.
Charlotte Smith added 16 points, tying her career best, and Rhonda Mapp had 15 points and six rebounds for Charlotte (7-18).
MONARCHS 73, FIRE 70: At Portland, Ore., Tangela Smith scored 20 points, Ruthie Bolton-Holifield had 19 and Yolanda Griffith grabbed 14 rebounds as Sacramento held off Portland.
Sophia Witherspoon scored 22 points for the Fire, and Sylvia Crawley had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Monarchs (16-10) improved to 6-0 this season against expansion teams.
MERCURY 79, FEVER 65: At Phoenix, Brandy Reed scored 24 points and Jennifer Gillom had 21 as Phoenix dealt Indiana its fourth loss in five games.
Michelle Griffiths added 16 points for the Mercury (16-9), who have won two straight games.
