Cap constraints

The Jazz are expected to be well over the league-imposed salary cap for the 2000-2001 season, which is estimated to be $35.5-to-$36 million (exact amount to be determined later this summer). And here is why:

Jazz players under contract:

Player 2000-2001 salary

Karl Malone $15.75 million

John Stockton $11 million

Greg Ostertag $6.5 million

Bryon Russell $4 million

Adam Keefe $3.1 million

Olden Polynice $2.25 million

Mid-level exception; does not count toward cap

Quincy Lewis, $1 million (20 percent allowable above slotted rookie scale, $833,700 counts toward the cap)

Scott Padgett, $730,800 (20 percent allowable above slotted rookie scale, $609,000 counts toward the cap)

* Some salaries are estimates and/or approximate

Cap-applicable total of players already under contract: $41.79 million (estimate/approximate)

Estimated cap: $36 million (2000-01)

Amount over the cap (committed salaries only) More than $5 million

Results: No cap room! Team are allowed to go over the cap to pay their own free agents, but there are limited possibilities for signing free agents from other teams!
