BOSTON — The Boston archdiocese has given some parishes an extra reason to be thankful — it has forgiven $28.2 million of their debts.

Cardinal Bernard Law has decided to forgive some or all monetary debts for 104 of the church's 327 parishes as part of the celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of Christianity.

Many Christian leaders, including Pope John Paul II, have made debt forgiveness a theme this year, saying that a passage in Leviticus requires forgiveness in jubilee years, which occur every half-century.

The loss of the $28 million will be made up through fund-raising.
