Twenty-seven Utah schoolteachers have received $500 grants to help bring the Olympic spirit to their classrooms.

The grants, awarded for the second year by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Winter Games, went to teachers in Cache, Davis, Granite, Iron, Jordan, Millard, Ogden, Provo, Salt Lake City, Tooele and Weber school districts. In all, 100 grants will be awarded prior to the Games.

Grant proposals included learning music from around the world and a program to design a house accessible to Paralympic athletes. Applications were reviewed by representatives of the State Office of Education, Utah Education Association and the Utah School Superintendents Association.

"The teachers were very creative in proposing programs that will bring the international flavor of the Olympic Games to the classroom," said Judy Stanfield, SLOC education director. "The Organizing Committee is excited to make these school programs a reality for Utah schoolchildren."
