SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Thanks to impressive barrel racing by Kassie Mowry, Jackie Dannelly and Jamie Jarvis on Sunday, Utah captured the National High School Rodeo Finals championship.

Utah tallied 5590.83 points to edge Texas at 5462.5 points and Oklahoma at 3378.33 points.

Mowry, of Cedar City, won the girls' barrel racing championship with combined times of 52.07 on three runs. Dannelly, of Enterprise, finished second while Spanish Fork's Jarvis captured third.

Utah's other individual champ was Derek Denton, of Sterling, whose 437 points in the boys' cutting edged all competitors. Spanish Fork's Aaron Hughes finished 10th with 424 points.

St. George's Jennifer Lytle may not have won individual gold, but she made her presence felt. She finished third in goat tying and eighth in breakaway roping.

Hooper's Angi Prevedel was honored as the second attendant in the rodeo queen contest.

Utah's girls cutting team also had a strong showing with Megan Jensen, Jamie Clark and Jenna Coombs finishing sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.

Other Utahns with good showings were Lance Sagers, sixth in bareback riding; Colby Olsen, 12th in bareback; Nicole Mitchell, 13th in barrel racing; Coby Hadley, 15th in calf roping; Gary Grant, 8th in saddle bronc riding; Taylor White, 11th in saddle bronc riding; Clint Robinson, 11th in steer wrestling.
