Sidewinders 5, Buzz 4
TUCSON, Ariz. — It came down to the bullpens on Sunday night, and when the dust settled the Tucson relievers did their job and the Buzz's did not as the Sidewinders edged Salt Lake 5-4.
The Buzz had taken a 4-3 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Luis Rivas, but the Sidewinders got singles from Esteban Beltre, Luis Ortiz and Bryant Nelson off Gus Gandarillas to tie the game in the seventh. Chris Garza (0-1) came on in the eighth for Salt Lake and gave David Dellucci a triple on his first pitch. One out later, Dellucci scored the game-winner on a grounder to Rivas.
Tucson relievers Todd Revenig and David Evans (5-2) combined to retire all 10 batters they faced. Two Buzz players were thrown out on the base paths, with Mike Moriarty thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on a one-out double by Javier Valentin in the third inning, and Kevin Roberson was gunned down trying to go from first to third on a one-out single by Rivas.
John Barnes had given the Buzz the early 1-0 advantage by hitting the third pitch of the game from Tucson starter David Tuttle into the Sidewinder bullpen.
