George Mitchell, the former U.S. senator who guided peace talks in Northern Ireland, was honored Monday with the Tipperary International Peace Award.

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who appeared with Mitchell at the ceremony, said the award was a tribute to Mitchell's skill and vision during his five years of involvement in the talks.

"Everyone who took part in the talks acquired huge respect for George Mitchell, who encouraged all sides to contribute but was also determined to build, brick by brick, a consensus that would result in agreement," Ahern said.
