Sales of St. John's wort herbal supplements climbed to more than $100 million in 1999. Studies suggest that it may be modestly effective against mild to moderate depression, and until recently, the herbal supplement was considered safe.

But recent research has shown that it can decrease blood levels when used with a wide range of prescription drugs, with potentially dangerous results. Researchers believe it affects drug metabolism by boosting production of a key liver enzyme, speeding elimination of many common drugs, according to Consumer Reports on Health.
