River Cats 5, Buzz 4

Despite all of their success so far this season, the Salt Lake Buzz have only two wins in games they have trailed going into the ninth inning.

The Buzz tried for a third Friday night in Sacramento, but their rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to the River Cats.

Buzz pinch-hitter Javier Valentin grounded out to third with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at first after the Buzz had scored two.

The River Cats led 5-2 going into the ninth, but Doug Mientkiewicz greeted reliever Mike Mohler with his 11th homer of the season.

Todd Walker followed with a triple to left-center, but Brian Buchanan grounded to third and Torii Hunter struck out.

A.J. Pierzynski knocked Walker in with a double down the right field line to make it a 5-4 game. Pierzynski took third on a passed ball and Robin Jennings walked to put runners at the corners, but Luis Vizcaino came in and got Valentin to ground out for his third save of the season.

Mientkiewicz's RBI double in the first gave the Buzz the lead, but second inning solo homers by Jose Ortiz and Jorge Velandia off starting and losing pitcher Mike Romano (2-1) put Sacramento out in front.

Buchanan's leadoff homer in the fourth tied the game at 2-2, but the Cats took advantage of back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the fourth to score a pair and take the lead for good.

Velandia, who began the year hitting .125 for Oakland, went 4 for 4 with a homer and three RBI to lead the River Cats eight hit attack.
