The gusting winds at Wingpointe on Monday didn't seem to affect San Diego's Roger Harrison. He fired a 67 to lead a group of 31 qualifiers at the Utah Open Players Championship qualifying tournament at Wingpointe Golf Course.
Former University of Utah golfer John Owen shot a 70 along with Carey Shinkle of Carbon Country Club and Rick Taniguchi of Las Flores, Calif.
The 31 qualifiers join the 125 exempt players for the Utah Open, which will be played Friday through Sunday at Jeremy Country Club in Park City. Pro-ams will be played Tuesday through Thursday.
Of the 31 qualifiers, 18 are from out of state.
David Booth, last year's qualifying winner with a 66, shot a 71 Monday to finish tied for fourth.
Other local golfers who qualified included Mick Riley pro Shawn Andreason (72), Lakeside pro Greg Dixon (72), University of Utah golfer Ryan Ellis (73), Georgia Tech-bound Jake Ellison (73), South Mountain pro Kip Guidry (73), Russ Madsen (73), Cedar City amateur Stephen Simister (73) and Provo amateur Christian Rhineer (74).
Recent West Jordan high graduate Greg Buckway shot a 76 as did eight other golfers. After the eight-man playoff, he was one of the four who advanced to the 74th annual Utah Open.
Tee times for the field will run Thursday.
