Henrietta Swickar Nyer, younger daughter of Earl Oscar Swickard and Hortense Morrow Swickard, died peacefully in Idaho Falls, Idaho on August 5, 2000.

She was born in Newman, Ill., on Oct. 13, 1922 and married Warren Edwin Nyer on July 15, 1943.

She is survived by her loving husband, Warren; and their two sons, Michael Morrow and Nicholas Carl; nieces, Martha, Christine, and Nancy; and nephew, Gerald Swickard. Her brother, Earl Oscar Junior and sister, Virginia Hagebush have preceded her in death.

Brief services for the family will be held at Fairfield Cemetery near Newman, IL. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Fairfield Cemetery Association, Box 259, Newman, IL., 61942.

Henrietta graduated from secretarial college in Champaign-Urbana, IL., in 1942. She went to work at the University of Chicago Press, where she met her future husband, a student and employee of the physics dept.

After marriage, she joined the Manhattan Project and worked at Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Los Alamos, N.M. In 1944 she lived briefly in Richland, WA. She was part of a very small group of women who witnessed the first atomic bomb test. She viewed the test from a mountainside above Los Alamos 180 miles north of the test site at Alamogordo, N.M. Throughout the war she kept the nature of her employment a secret from family and friends.

Henrietta became a mother and homemaker in 1947. In 1951 Henrietta moved with her husband and two sons to Idaho Falls. She was active at various times in Cub Scouts, hospital volunteering, and in Idaho Falls Symphony Friends.

Henrietta brought joy and happiness to the lives of her many friends. Her passing is a sad time for all.
