Deadline extended for Utah areas that will be assigned new area code

Utah will add the 385 area code in Morgan, Weber, Davis and Utah counties beginning Dec. 31, but the deadline that will make dialing the new code mandatory is being pushed farther into the future with the FCC's approval of a number-conservation plan.

Currently, telecommunications providers are issued blocks of unused phone numbers 10,000 at a time — quite often leaving many numbers in the block tied up and unused.

Under a Utah Public Service Commission plan, number blocks will be issued in lots of 1,000 instead of 10,000 beginning in 30 days, reducing the quantity of unused phone numbers that get tied up and extending the pool of numbers available in the current 801 area code region along the Wasatch Front.

The FCC has given the PSC authority to maintain number rationing procedures for six months after implementation of the area code split, which will limit the 801 area code to Salt Lake County.
