River Cats 7, Buzz 3
Eric Byrnes' three-run homer in the fifth inning keyed the Sacramento comeback as the River Cats rallied for a 7-3 win over the Salt Lake Buzz Thursday night. Byrnes drilled a 3-2 pitch from Dan Perkins (8-10) over the left field wall to give the 'Cats a 5-3 lead. Mark Bellhorn had walked and Jose Ortiz singled to set the table for Byrnes.
The Buzz had taken a 2-0 lead in the second on a blast by Matt LeCroy, his second homer of the series. It was also the 163rd homer for Salt Lake this season, a franchise record surpassing the 162 hits by the 1997 club. After Sacramento scored in the third to make it 2-1, Marcus Jensen's RBI single in the fourth extended the Buzz lead to 3-1.
Sacramento used six pitchers that limited the Buzz's bats to six hits in the game. Luis Vuzcaino (4-1) picked up the win with one-and-third scoreless innings of relief.
Salt Lake has managed only 19 hits in the first three games of the series.
The Buzz lead is down to 9 1/2 games over second place Tacoma, and their magic number remains at eight.
