After a mediocre opening round at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship on Monday, Farmington's Daniel Summerhays shot a 69, the lowest score of the day, on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday's match play.
Summerhays, Utah's 16-year-old amateur champion, is the fourth seed out of 64 golfers heading into match play at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.
Salt Lake City's Stephen Newren is the 44th seed heading into match play.
While Newren is having success at the boys' tournament, his sisters are holding their own at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship, also in North Plains, Ore.
Natalie Newren shot a combined 154 in her two rounds to qualify for match play as the 23rd seed, while Rachel Newren shot a combined 160 to advance as the 57th seed.
Annie Thurman of Salt Lake City qualified as the 28th seed.
