WASHINGTON — It's been a relatively mild year for tornadoes, for a change, the government reported Tuesday.

The peak of the tornado season is March through July, and to date there have been 741 twisters reported, a little more than half the total at this time in each of the last two years, the National Weather Service reported.

"This year is rare, but not unheard of. It's just one of the natural fluctuations that occur," said Dr. Joseph Schaefer, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Storm Prediction Center.
