A man arrested Friday for investigation of abusing his girlfriend's 6-year-old son has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police initially found a severely injured Trevor Wagner, 6, at his mother's home near 800 E. 200 South Friday. The boy died Saturday at a Salt Lake hospital, police say.

According to the charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court, Bobby SanJuan, 35, told detectives he became angry with Wagner because the child was late coming home from school Friday.

When the boy came home, SanJuan said, he struck and kicked Wagner several times and caused the child to hit his head along a wood strip at the bottom of a couch, the charges state. SanJuan then told Wagner to disrobe and take a bath. When SanJuan checked on the boy five minutes later, Wagner was unconscious and not breathing, the charges state.

SanJuan stated he didn't call for medical help for at least an hour after finding the boy. When the boy's mother came home, SanJuan told her he was sorry. The mother found her son naked and unconscious lying on her bed, the charges state.

An autopsy determined Wagner suffered a fractured vertebra, broken ribs and massive closed head injuries, which the medical examiner said caused his death, court documents state.

SanJuan remained in the Salt Lake County Jail early Wednesday morning on $100,000 cash-only bail. If convicted, he could face a maximum penalty of life in prison.
