A 43-year-old woman named Aupo lives in the mountains above Chiang Mai, Thailand, in the Karen village of Mae Ka. The Karen sell their baskets, textiles and instruments directly to Ten Thousand Villages through the Thai Tribal Crafts co-op. Aupo has made this purse using traditional plant dyes and decorated it with seeds.
She also sells some of her textiles directly to tourists. However, she and most of her neighbors have come to depend on the steady income they get from the fair-trade organizations.
