Golden Spikes 4, Buzz 3

OMAHA, Neb. — Anthony Medrano delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and send Omaha on its way to a 4-3 win over the Salt Lake Buzz Friday night. Medrano's one-out hit was the third of three straight singles off David Hooten (1-2), and it put the Golden Spikes out in front for good. Medrano would drive in an insurance run in the seventh with another one-out single.

The Buzz tried to come back in the eighth as Mike Moriarty reached on an infield single and John Barnes doubled to right off reliever Dan Murray to put runners on at second and third with nobody out. Chad Allen was next, and he was robbed on a diving catch of a line drive by Omaha first baseman J.P. Roberge. Doug Mientkiewicz was then walked intentionally to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Moriarty, but Murray fanned Matt LeCroy and Casey Blake to end the threat.

Along with the spectacular defensive play, Roberge was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Chad Durbin (4-3) struck out seven and allowed only four hits in seven innings for the win. Barnes drove in the first two runs for the Buzz with a double in the third inning.
