BROOKINGS, S.D. — A train carrying corn through South Dakota derailed Saturday, killing one crew member and injuring another.
The Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad said someone deliberately caused the derailment. Kevin Schieffer, president of the railroad, called it a "cold-blooded" action. He said a composite drawing was made of someone seen leaving the scene.
Schieffer said the westbound train was diverted to a sidetrack, where it struck eight parked cars loaded with soybeans.
The scene was chaotic, with locomotives pointing in the air, rail cars tangled up and corn spilled, Schieffer said.
The 55-car train was on its way to central South Dakota.
