SOUTH OGDEN — An Ogden police officer is on administrative leave after his gun went off, striking another man in the hand Friday evening.

At 5 p.m., officer Nate Jensen, assigned to the Weber/Morgan County Narcotics Strike Force, went to a home at 5650 S. 1735 East looking for a man wanted in a drug investigation. Jensen and another officer found the man, 22, and attempted to arrest him but the suspect resisted, Ogden Lt. Dan Greenhalgh said.

The officers struggled with the suspect, who apparently attempted to grab Jensen's gun. During the struggle the gun went off and the suspect was shot in the hand, Greenhalgh said.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital where he had surgery. He was discharged from the hospital Saturday and then arrested for investigation of assaulting a police officer, Greenhalgh said.

Police also discovered the man was wanted by Adult Probation and Parole and Greenhalgh said he could be sent back to prison for the parole violation if prosecutors don't file assault charges. The man was in the Weber County Jail Saturday night.

Jensen will remain on paid administrative leave until the outcomes of two police investigations are completed, Greenhalgh said.
