Elmer John Schow, age 71, died August 24, 2000 at his home after several prolonged illnesses.

Born Jan 10, 1929 in Brigham City, UT to Elmer C. and Eleanor Schow. He married Marilyn Bulkley Dec 21, 1950. John was employed at Sam Weller's Book Store and later Deseret Book Store. John was a published poet and essayist. His work appeared in the anthology Great and Peculiar Beauty, a Utah Reader edited by Thomas Lyon and Terry Tempest Williams. He was music critic for the magazine Utah Holiday in the 1970's, judged contests for the Utah Poetry Society, and also served as a Sterling Scholar judge. His first love was music and he studied piano at Brigham Young University and Utah State Agricultural College. He later attended the University of Utah. His enthusiasm for all the arts was well known.

Survived by his wife; sisters, Iris Schow, Salt Lake City, Amy Fern Bergen, St. George; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, 6-8 p.m. Mon., and Tues. at the Capitol Hill LDS First Ward, 413 N. West Capitol Blvd, 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at 11 a.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave. and "N" St.
