BATH, Maine (AP) — Members of the Bath Iron Works' largest union showed what they thought of the shipyard's last contract proposal by piling up their copies and setting them on fire. Then they voted to strike.

Pickets went up at the shipyard for the first time in 15 years Monday following a resounding union vote against a contract offer for 4,800 employees.

About 85 percent of the union members who cast tallies at the Cumberland County Civic Center voted in favor of the strike, said John Portela, a union financial officer.

A shipyard spokeswoman said the company felt its offer was fair and that the rejection of the proposal came as a surprise.
