UTES LOSE IN OT AGAIN: At Missoula, Mont., the University of Utah women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive overtime loss in two regular season games, falling 2-1 to Montana at UM South Campus Stadium.

Sophomore Katie Tate headed in a cross from sophomore Kim Naylor in the 24th minute to give Utah an early lead. Montana tied the contest in the 75th minute. The Grizzlies scored the game-winning goal nine minutes into the extra stanza off a corner kick.

Utah's home opener starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, against Washington State.


HAMLET CUP: At Commack, N.Y., Magnus Norman beat Thomas Enqvist in the finals of the Hamlet Cup, his first victory over his fellow Swede in five career meetings.

PILOT PEN: At New Haven, Conn., Venus Williams extended her winning streak to four tournaments Saturday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Monica Seles in the Pilot Pen final.


VARGAS BEATS THOMPSON: Fernando Vargas beat Ross Thompson to retain his IBF 154-pound title.
