Berneice Benson Shelley was born May 25, 1932, in Saint George, Utah to Berneice Benson Robbins who died five hours after the birth of her daughter. Berneice was raised by her mother's parents, John Cattle Benson and Elizabeth (Bes-sie) Adams Macfarlane Benson. LaBerta Whitlock (Salt Lake City), Helen Toland (Bountiful), and Janet Hatfield (Salt Lake City) were raised together as sisters in their early youth.
Berneice began her life in Saint George, a town her great-grandfather helped to found. She moved from there with her family to Salt Lake City, Milford, and Beaver. She attended Provo Schools, graduating from Dixon Jr. High, and Provo High School. On June 14, 1950 she married Harold Merlin Shelley in the Manti Temple. Their children are Nancy Shelley, Marianne Wright (Wayne), Scott Merlin Shelley (Jamie), Wayne Russell Shelley (Elisabeth), and John Mark Shelley (deceased). While raising these four teenagers she attended BYU for three years. She was the grandmother to 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one special grandson.
Berneice was always active in the LDS Church, serving in many leadership callings. She served a mission in the Utah Stake. She was also a worker in the Provo Temple.
She will be greatly missed but her reunions will be sweet and long awaited. Berneice a published author would like to sign her obituary 30.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tues. Aug 29, in the Mapleton 9th Ward LDS Chapel, 31 W. Maple, Mapleton. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Mon. at the Chapel, or Tues. morning one hour prior to services. Interment, Springville Evergreen. Directors, Berg Mortuary of Provo.
