SALT LAKE CITY-- Gretta Baer Smith, 91, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at the Highland Cove Health Care Center in Salt Lake City, UT.

She was born June 3, 1909 in Provi-dence, Utah, the daughter of Joseph R. and Gertrude Hansen Leishman Baer. She married Robert Newell Smith November 28, 1936 in Logan, Utah. He died in 1950.

Gretta lived in Cache Valley and attended Utah State University where she studied business. She worked for Metropolitan Life in Salt Lake City. She served as the County Recorder in Cache Valley for 25 years. She was the Lady Vice President of Utah State Association of Counties and served on the Board of Directors. She also served for 20 years as the Chairman of Precinct #8, Logan Republican Party. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in the Sunday School and youth organizations.

Gretta is survived by one son and two daughters: Dr. Robert B. Smith (Janet), Julie Murray, and Jayne Wassom (Bob), all of Salt Lake City. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Dr. Robert E. Smith, Elissa Richards, Scott Murray, Amy Murray, Nicole Smith, Erika Wassom; and six great-grandchildren: Jackson Richards, Connor Richards, Zeke Richards, Griffin Murray, Max Smith, and Thomas Smith. In addition, she is survived by six brothers: LeGrand Baer, Marcell Baer, Owen Baer, Wesley Baer, Lloyd Baer, Scott Baer; and three sisters: Lucille Campbell, Juanita Davis, and Donna Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Glen Astle Baer; and two sisters, Lois Waite and Dorothy Plumelet.

Friends may call at Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2000. A private family viewing will be held prior. Graveside services will be held at the Logan City Cemetery following visitation.

In lieu of flowers, Gretta requested that donations be made to the University of Utah Medical Center in care of: Karen Call, Health Science Development, 5th floor Moran, 50 N. Medical Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84132.

The family expresses gratitude for the care and compassion given by Dr. William Dunson, Jr., Hospice and the Highland Cove Health Care Center.
