PROVO — Kraig Harris Gamble has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for raping a 13-year-old girl he met at the Strawberry Days carnival in Pleasant Grove.

The victim told police she met Gamble at the carnival on June 17, 1999, and he offered her a ride to her home in Provo. She said he parked near the canyon, raped her, apologized and told her he would meet her at the carnival the next day. Instead, police met him.

Gamble, 19, Highland, faced a minimum mandatory sentence of six, 10 or 15 years, to be set by the judge based on mitigating and aggravating circumstances.

A pre-sentencing report by the Adult Probation and Parole Department recommended a sentence of 10 years to life.

Richard Gale, Gamble's attorney, asked for a lesser sentence, saying Gamble was abused as a child and was developmentally slow, bordering on mentally retarded.

Deputy Utah County Attorney Sherry Ragan said Gamble is a clear danger to society.

Fourth District Judge Guy Burningham on Monday also sentenced Gamble to one to 15 years for third-degree felony sexual abuse of a child, and ordered Gamble to pay restitution of more than $900.
