A bill to give schools a one-time $23.8 million infusion to replace and notch-up textbook supplies unanimously cleared the House Education Standing Committee Thursday.

HB40, sponsored by House Speaker Marty Stephens, R-Farr West, would distribute the money based on need and district effort to fund textbooks.

The bill also would require the state school board to come up with a plan to maintain textbook numbers and quality and help monitor schools' textbook spending.
