A bill passed by a Senate committee Thursday would add an average of one year to the prison sentence of certain individuals convicted of attempted murder.

SB103, sponsored by Sen. Dave Gladwell, R-North Ogden, is designed to strengthen punishment for people who come very close to carrying out a murder.

Under current law, someone who would be charged with first-degree murder had the victim died is charged with a second-degree felony for attempted murder.

Under Gladwell's bill, if the victim suffers serious bodily injury, then the classification would stay the same.
