WEST VALLEY CITY — Police released more details Tuesday afternoon concerning an alleged murder-for-hire plot.
A 28-year old man and a 17-year old woman were arrested Sunday for conspiring to kill a man who was seeing the suspect's estranged wife, said Chief Alan Kerstein.
The suspect asked the 17-year old woman to arrange the murder, promising her cash and a car if she succeeded, said Kerstein. The 17-year old then called a 15-year old friend to help her, he said.
The 15-year old began having second thoughts however, and called police late Friday or early Saturday morning, said Kerstein.
After learning of the murder plot, detectives installed audio and video taping equipment in the 15-year old's home and then had her invite over all the key players, Kerstein said.
The suspects were caught on tape talking about the murder scheme, said Kerstein. Shortly after leaving the the teen's home, the 28-year old man and 17-year old woman were arrested for conspiring to commit murder.
The 17-year old received an additional charge for having a .40-caliber handgun in her possession.
Kerstein said good police work was the key to preventing the killing. "(Detectives) came in on Super Bowl weekend to work around the clock for 48 hours to take the suspects into custody," he said.
Police now want to find out where the teenager got her weapon.
The suspect who was arrested was not living with his estranged wife; they were scheduled to get a divorce soon.
