ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Gov. Parris Glendening has asked for federal money to help in the recovery from a deadly tornado that caused major damage at the University of Maryland.

Glendening asked President Bush to declare Maryland a disaster area, saying state and local governments face millions of dollars in damage and cleanup costs.

"This has been one of the most devastating tornadoes in Maryland's history and certainly the most traumatic," Glendening wrote is the letter dated Tuesday.

Two sisters were killed when the tornado touched down on the University of Maryland campus Sept. 24, lifting their car over an eight-story dorm and dropping it in a wooded area. A volunteer firefighter responding to the crisis later died of a heart attack.
