Gossip doesn't cut it with Goldie Hawn. The snide personal aside is not only destructive, she says, but dreary, and she's asking people — nicely — to stop.

The actress visited Washington Monday to say that Americans still shaken by Sept. 11 should return not just to normal, but to a "better normal" that recognizes how hurtful gossip can be.

Hawn spoke on behalf of an anti-gossip campaign called Words Can Heal. Hard as it may be to imagine either Washington or Hollywood without gossip, Hawn said it all makes her eyes glaze over.

"I have sat around dinner tables of others where they have done nothing but talk about people the whole dinner," she said in an interview. "I didn't want to be there. Not because it was terrible what they say, but I was bored."
