WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — At least seven Olympic teams in the 2002 Winter Games plan to do their final training here, the West Yellowstone Ski Education Foundation said Monday.

Biathlon teams from Norway, Russia, Japan, France, the Czech Republic and the United States are scheduled to be in West Yellowstone, the foundation said. A cross country ski team from Russia also plans to come here.

"We're expecting some to arrive as early as Jan. 20, and others won't be here until the end of the month," said Marc Sheppard, director of the foundation. "Most are staying right up to the last minute."

The Olympics open Feb. 8 in Salt Lake City.

Sheppard said West Yellowstone's appeal includes good snow and trails, a full-scale biathlon range and proximity to Salt Lake City.

The Ski Education Foundation has been asked to hold a special biathlon sprint to give the visiting athletes a race opportunity before the Olympics, said Sheppard, himself a biathlete.

The Olympic torch is to pass through West Yellowstone on Jan. 27 en route to Salt Lake City.
