The two men shot Friday by a Salt Lake County Sheriff's Deputy after allegedly trying to rob a bank both remained hospitalized Saturday.
Michael Adam Robinson, 39, was in serious condition at University hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest. Curtis Wayne Self, 41, was in the intensive care unit at LDS Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.
Both men had lengthy arrest histories with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office and are believed to have robbed the same bank on Wednesday, deputy Peggy Faulkner said. Charges in the shooting are expected to be screened with the Salt Lake District Attorney's Office sometime next week, Faulkner said.
Robinson was on parole from the Utah State Prison after a robbery conviction and had numerous other drug related arrests, Faulkner said.
"His history with us in our jail started in 1986," Faulkner said.
Self's arrest history with the sheriff's office, mostly for drug charges, dates back to 1985, Faulkner said.
Meanwhile, deputy Jeff Lone remained on routine paid administrative leave pending investigations by the district attorney and sheriff into the shooting.
Sheriff Aaron Kennard has praised Lone's actions.
Lone was by himself when he was confronted by two men who attempted to rob Washington Federal Savings, 3981 S. Wasatch Blvd., Friday just before 9 a.m. One man had a gun. The other was armed with a tire iron and was holding a female bank employee hostage.
Lone ordered the men to release the hostage. When one of the men aimed his gun at Lone, the deputy shot him in the chest.
He then ordered the second man again to release his hostage and get on his knees. The man released the woman and began kneeling when he suddenly reached for the gun that his partner had been holding, police said. Lone fired his weapon again, striking the second man. The 54-year-old woman was hit in the knee by a ricocheting bullet fragment, but was treated and released from the hospital Friday.
