A Salt Lake man has been charged by a federal grand jury with robbing several Salt Lake-area businesses.

Ifalame Moala Motuliki, 19, now faces 12 counts on charges ranging from robbery to extortion. The indictment alleges Motuliki used force, violence and intimidation to take money from the businesses.

Prosecutors are seeking a conviction under the Hobbs Act, which adds additional penalties when a robber interrupts interstate commerce. The proposed enhancements relate to the fact that some of the businesses that were robbed deal in imported items.
