First lady Laura Bush said Wednesday she will spend a week this fall as a volunteer teacher. "I plan to practice what I preach," she said.
Bush told a symposium in Washington, D.C., that she will put her full energy behind promoting the education proposals her husband unveiled in his speech to Congress.
"He wants schools to chart their own course to success through local control, high standards, accountability and research-based reading programs," she said. "I want to help him keep that promise."
She encouraged lawmakers to approach his legislation from the vantage point of children's futures, rather than their political differences.
